As taildragger pilots, we all have a story to tell. Our stories are the narrative of our paths to aviation and our evolution as pilots. For a lucky few, they are taildragger stories! There’s nothing I love more than glimpsing into the lives and stories of our lady taildragger members and never have I been disappointed. The wonderful story you are about to read is an incredible rags to riches story. It’s about a penniless, young, female immigrant who willed herself into a hugely successful life as a pilot and business owner in a new country. I’m proud to introduce you to LadiesLoveTaildraggers’ member, Erissa Yong-Wilson.
Approach Control: 747 Heavy, traffic is a 777 at your 2 o’clock at 4000 feet.
747 Heavy: Roger, Approach, we have that light twin in sight.

“TWA 2341, for noise abatement turn right 45 Degrees.”
“Centre, we are at 35,000 feet. How much noise can we make up here?”
“Sir, have you ever heard the noise a 747 makes when it hits a 727?”

Sometimes two is better than one especially in airplanes. Learning to fry a multi-engine aircraft or "twin" brings about a new dimension and set of skills for the pilot.
In the past, the marking rules on a flight test in essence were the following:
- "4" is good
- "3" - minor mistakes
- "2" - major mistakes, going outside tolerances, but correcting in a timely manner
- "1" - critical mistakes, going outside tolerances without correcting, exceeding twice the tolerances
- Outcome of the flight test: as long as you don't get any ones, it's a pass. More or less.

Let’s talk money for a moment. I observe several dozen fresh pilot license holders every year, many of which go the similar path: “got driver’s license, bought a car, got pilot license, have to buy a plane now”. But you also might have heard a saying that there are only two happy days in airplane (or boat, actually) ownership – the day you buy it and the day you sell it. So let’s look at our options.
Welcome to the challenging course of a Flight Instructor Rating. The course is a rigid program, designed to prepare flight instructors within the minimum Class 1 times - and maximum homework, self-study, buddy practice and critique. It will be a lot of hard work, and often it might seem you don’t see results. Do not get discouraged! be patient and persistent. The sparkle in the eyes of your first solo student will be much worth it!
